Whether it’s the infamous Ollie’s Pt. or legendary surf town of Tamarido, a great break is
never more that an hour away.
So where are the best places to surf in Guanacate Costa Rica? Well, we have you

Playa Tamarindo makes it to the top of our list because of its consistent swells and being the perfect destination for both beginner to intermediate surfers. And while many advanced surfers my day trip to more advanced spots, Tamarindo is still the place were even the best in the world like to stay and enjoy the town, nightlife and with the right swell on the Tamarindo River-mouth hit the water for some great breaks.
Featured in the cult surfing classic Endless Summer II, Ollie’s point has become one of Costa Rica’s top surf destinations. Only accessible by boat, Ollies Point features a point break and a fast moving right that is especially challenging June through October. Charters are available from multiple operators on the Guanacaste coast.
Know affectionately by locals as “Little Hawaii” due to its long break and year around good surfing. but the rainy season is when the best waves can be found at Playa Avellanas. Along with great surfing, Playa Avellanas is also know for its unoficial mascot, a swimming pig named Lola who can be found at the local beachfront restaurant/bar called (you guessed it) Lola’s.
Named for witches that were once believed to in habbit the large rock island guarding the beach front, Witches Rock is one of Guanacaste most well known beach breaks. Featuring both great lefts and rights it is no wonder it also made its way into the surf classic Endless Summer II. We recommend checking out Witched Rock Surf Camp for charters.
Located about 2 hours away from the popular beach town of Tamarindo, Ostional not only offers waves suitable for both intermediate to advanced surfers but also is the native nesting ground for the Olive Ridley Sea Turtles. Check with your guides in advance to set up an evening surf trip with a stop by the nesting grounds afterwords, definitely a must see while in Costa Rica.
